Did anyone think that the rise of Sarbanes-Oxley would lead to tighter control of employee laptops? Yet now it seems logical--there have been way too many data breaches involving stolen laptops. Many firms are lumping data security into the realm of compliance and control. Of course, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999 and the the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) factor in as well. The bottom line is that more companies are likely to adopt more stringent rules regarding employee use.
