Options grant scandal turns toward auditors
The unfurling options grant date scandal has taken a turn toward the Big Four. This is not surprising. At least one company being probed, semiconductor-maker Micrel, is suing Deloitte & Touche, charging that it relied on its advice for its options grant dates. The industry is not taking this lightly. At least one second-tier firm has upgraded its audit procedures. Others are asking the PCAOB to quickly issue guidance on uncovering abuses. The bottom line, however, is that it may be difficult to catch all instances of abuse, especially if the top executives were intimately involved.
